Your Past is Your Path

We are a goals-based, forward-moving, high-achieving species. Period. From technology to science to humanitarian efforts we are constantly pushing forward in pursuit of positive growth. On a personal level we set fitness, family, and financial goals and generally invest in personal growth. We are well on our way to greatness with the omittance of one spectacular piece of ourselves: our past.  In order to move forward we must unravel the past.

“In blissful ignorance, we focus on where we want to be rather than where we have been.”

In the realm of wellness your past paves your way to health, or lack thereof. You are a sum of your habits, many of which form even before you hit double digits. Unraveling habit takes true introspection but the outcome of feeling clear illuminates the next step on your divinely aligned path. Take a minute to think of the following habits and where they really started:

  • Tooth brushing
  • Exercising
  • Eating
  • Studying
  • Reading
  • Learning
  • Self care
  • Appearance

Now let’s get more specific…

  • Do you focus more on brushing your gums, teeth or tongue and why?
  • Who or what has shaped your exercise habits?
  • Compare your consumption of sugar, fruit, meat, vegetables. What specific memories do these food categories bring up?
  • How or from whom did you learn to study?
  • How do you learn and what is your first memory of learning?
  • Where did you learn to care for yourself in body and mind?
  • When you look in a mirror, what do you see first and why?

Take a moment of awe to realize that no two people will answer those questions the same way. Your habits are unique expressions of who you really are and even tiny habits matter on your journey. A final question regarding those above, Are those habits aligned with the you, you wish to be? Seemingly trivial habits contribute deeply to your wellness which in turn leads to your health. How you brush your teeth, what side you sleep on, and how you study all matter in your quest to live your most fulfilling life. Use your past and your knowledge of self to refocus on what truly aligns with your goals.
